Let us start with the basic. Henna is made from herbs, meaning it is all natural. The powder is extracted from a henna plant, where the leaves are dried and grounded into a fine powder. This powder should be mixed with water, eucalyptus oil, tea, coffee, and lime and then applied on the body.

You may also hear the term 'Mehndi '. This is the Indian term for Henna, which is used to describe the art of applying henna onto your hands and feet.

How Can Henna be Used
Henna is used to create temporary tattoos mainly to the hands and feet of a woman. Traditionally it was used for its medicinal qualities. It became popular in India because of its cooling effect in the hot Indian summers. The two most popular uses of the henna is for dying hair and making tattoos on different parts of the body.

For tattooing...
People usually choose areas that are visible - the palm, arm, feet, wrist or around the navel. There are different designs and patterns that can be used to draw intricately on a woman's hand. During my wedding, we hired an artist who had various books containing different patterns. Our artist had an impromptu style but there are many templates you can use to apply your design. In order to get the color of mehndi to last a long time, read the 5 steps below.

For Hair Dye...
Because it is a natural dye, the color is beautiful and gives the hair a lustrous look. The color ranges from black to red to brown. Henna has to be mixed in the right proportion with the right ingredients to get the desired color and effect. Henna works by coating the hair strands. It's been said that henna cannot lighten your hair, but, I'd have to disagree. My mom's hair is naturally dark brown, almost black and with the use of henna the color significantly lightens to a faint brown. Henna stops falling hair and itching of the scalp. It also helps dandruff problems.

Henna at Weddings and the Meaning Behind It
Applying art form of henna is an important part of wedding ceremonies. I applied mehndi recently for my own wedding, which is a custom for all Indian women. Mehndi usually lasts for at least one to two weeks.

According to my grandparents, during an Indian wedding, the bride, family members, and guests apply henna. Henna is a symbol of love between husband and wife. The common belief is that henna brings good luck. The bride's intricate mehndi pattern normally has the name of the groom interwoven into it. The groom is expected to find his name in the pattern. If he is unsuccessful, the myth is that the bride will control the marriage. Another myth is surrounding the color of the henna. The popular belief is that the deeper the color, the stronger the bond between bride and mother-in-law.

With henna on her hands, the bride doesn't have to do any household work-she is pampered and cared for.

5 Steps to Long Lasting Henna / Mehndi

1. Wash the area to be hennaed. Avoid lotions and oils.
2. Wax and manicure prior to the henna application.
3. Leave the henna paste on for up to seven or eight hours. The color depends on each individual's body chemistry. Henna darkens from orange to burgundy over a period of 48 hours. For my wedding, I left it on overnight and the color came out very dark.
4. Peel or scrape off the dry henna paste with a spoon or butter knife. Avoid using water to remove mehndi.
5. Apply a mixture of lemon and sugar to the dry area every few hours. This method significantly made my color and design come out dark and distinct.

Certain Drawbacks of Using Henna

When shopping for henna do not buy the pre-made henna mixes. Any henna paste advertising "instant" results probably contains chemical dyes such as PPD, also known as black henna.(Catherine Cartwright-Jones, hennapage.com). Black henna contains a chemical which can burn and scar the skin. While natural henna has a strong earthy smell, black henna has a chemical or ammonia smell.

If you have long hair, the buildup of henna will be significant over time. With curly hair, over time it can take quite a bit of the curl out.

You can buy henna at just about any Wholefoods store or a LUSH shop. It tends to be cheaper than chemical dyes, and is much less stressing on the hair, to a point. I prefer the Dulhan Mirchi henna. I used Red Rose henna before and the paste was globby and did not stain very well.

Henna and mehndi is an art form that has been transformed from traditional to trendy. According to Catherine Cartwright Jones, who manages The Henna Page believes this is most likely due to more and more South Asians immigrating to the West and celebrities like Madonna and Gwen Stefani sporting mehndi in their music videos. I have also noticed that most spas and salons now have added services for henna body art. Mehndi is also becoming a large part of cultural fairs and music festivals. You can always find a henna tattoo artist at the beach, but be careful because such artists usually use only black henna (which is dangerous to the skin). Also, don't be surprised if your recent event schedule includes a few mehndi theme styled parties.

As you can see, although henna and mehndi have become widespread, its customs will continue to tick around the clock.
